Keeping Your Heat Pump Running

To get the best use of your heat pump, it is important to do regular maintenance. Replace or clean the filters every couple of months, clean leaves off the outdoor unit, and have an inspection done every year to check the refrigerant as well as some electrical items. A little maintenance goes a long way to prolonging the life of your system, keeping the unit efficient, and reducing total breakdown costs.

How Heat Pumps Work

Heat pumps don't really create heat, they instead transfer it. In winter, heat pumps transfer heat extracted from outdoor air inside, warming a house. In summer, heat pumps transfer heat out of the house and cooling is done. Today's heat pumps use inverter-driven compressors that can start and stop a few degrees at a time to keep up with comfort requirements, unlike the old system's constant stop and go modes. A dual-fuel system will even work with a furnace switching from gas to electric and back again, depending on the weather and switching the furnace into an air-conditioning system in the summer.
